Well being

Here at Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School, we aim to promote positive mental health by recognising how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health to the whole school community.

We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall wellbeing and can affect their learning and achievement. The Department for Education (DfE) recognises that: “in order to help their children succeed, schools have a role to play in supporting them to be resilient and mentally healthy”.

Our curriculum promotes opportunities to develop self-esteem and gives positive experiences for overcoming adversity and building resilience.

Our role in school is to ensure that children are able to manage times of change and stress, and that they are supported to reach their potential or access help when they need it.

Our school has access to the MHST (Mental Health Support Teams).  The MHST is a school-based CAMHS offer for early intervention and prevention work to support positive mental health and wellbeing. The team works in partnership with local schools to offer a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

They work within both primary and secondary schools across the borough providing evidence-based interventions to support children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. They work closely with our Mental Health Lead to develop our whole school approach to mental health, providing consultations and sign-posting guidance.

If you feel concerned about your child’s mental health please contact Jane Pidduck via the office.

In our school they can work with parents to support children with mild to moderate anxiety or behavioural difficulties and offer regular parent webinars on a range of topics linked to children’s emotional wellbeing. They also offer groups for children around issues such as Resilience, Friendships or Transition to secondary school.
