History
Intent:
At Grand Avenue Primary School, the history curriculum is designed to inspire students’ curiosity about the past and its relevance to the present. Children will gain a good historical knowledge of the wider world and of their own personal history. The curriculum fosters critical thinking, encouraging learners to analyse sources, understand different perspectives and make connections to contemporary issues. The children are taught to use a variety of key historical concepts which further develop their knowledge and thinking to prepare them for their next stage of learning.
Implementation:
At Grand Avenue, we teach history through an enquiry based approach. Historical enquiry allows our children to question, interpret, explain and communicate their reasoning as a historian. Each history unit is launched with an enquiry question – a question where the answer is unknown at the beginning of the unit, but one that the children will be able to answer by the end. Lessons are based around one of our key concepts:
- Communicate Historically
- Interpret History
- Understand Chronology
- Historical Sources
These concepts, knowledge and skills are revisited throughout each year as the children progress through the school with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to both make connections to and build on their previous learning.
Impact:
Our pupils will leave Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School with a more critical and analytical mindset, equipped with the ability to make informed and balanced judgments grounded in historical knowledge. They will gain a deeper understanding of how historical events have shaped the present world, enriched by meaningful and memorable opportunities that leave a lasting impact. Through engaging visits and interactions, they will develop an enhanced appreciation of history's significance, while also acquiring a richer vocabulary that empowers them to articulate their understanding of key concepts effectively.
