Geography

Intent:

Geography at Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School aims to inspire a curiosity and fascination in pupils about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Pupils are equipped with knowledge about diverse places, people resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Implementation:

At Grand Avenue, our geography medium-term planning is guided by the National Curriculum and our own progression of skills document, to ensure the children’s learning and attainment is progressive. Throughout the school, children are introduced to our key geographical concepts at the beginning of each lesson. These are:

  • Investigating places
  • Communicating geographically
  • Exploring patterns

These concepts, knowledge and skills are revisited throughout each year as the children progress through the school with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to both make connections to and build on their previous learning.

Impact:

Our pupils will leave Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School with the ability to apply and develop key geographical skills gained through a variety of tasks and experiences, including fieldwork. They will have a thorough understanding of essential geographical concepts and the confidence to articulate their knowledge using accurate terminology and techniques. They have an appreciation for the diversity of physical and human conditions across the globe. Our pupils will also develop an informed concern for the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat, alongside a strong sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people. Moreover, they will leave with a clear sense of identity, shaped by their understanding of the UK and its connections with other countries.
