OPAL - Outdoor Play and Learning

Elevating Play at Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School

We are thrilled to announce that Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School is embarking on an exciting journey to transform our playtimes! We are officially launching the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme.

At Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School, we believe that every child deserves a childhood filled with adventure, and since 20% of school time is spent at play, we want to ensure every minute counts!

Why Focus on Play?

In the modern world, childhood has changed significantly. With average screen time reaching six hours a day and 56% of UK children only playing outdoors while at school, the opportunity for "real" play is shrinking.

Play is not just "messing about" - it is a vital biological necessity. It is how children develop the skills that simply cannot be taught in a classroom: resilience, creativity, cooperation and complex problem-solving.

What is the OPAL Programme?

OPAL is a multi-award-winning program backed by over 20 years of research and success in over 800 schools worldwide. By implementing this programme, Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School aims to provide:

  • Better Physical Health: Encouraging movement and coordination.

  • Improved Wellbeing: Boosting mental health through freedom and fun.

  • Faster Learning: Research shows that schools with OPAL see less teaching time lost to disputes and a significant improvement in classroom behaviour.

How You Can Help

This is a community effort! Over the next 18 months, we will be supported by an OPAL mentor. We will soon be asking for:

  1. Donations: Look out for a list of "loose parts" we might need (e.g., old suitcases, pots and pans, or cable drums).

  2. Support: Join us for upcoming events where you can see the transformation in action and even join in the play!

For more information, feel free to explore the OPAL website to watch videos of the programme in action.

Thank you for your continued support.
